Gypsy | Old Town Scottsdale | Rooster Cup Round 1 | Rooster Cup Day 2 Preview |
Alright @YouTheReader, Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac was the pick for this Sunday's Stumblin’ Along because Stevie Nicks was born in Phoenix, Arizona. This song came out in the Summer of ‘82.
Stevie Nicks told The Record in 1982, “The clothes I wear… that doesn’t change. I love long dresses. I love velvet. I love high boots. I never change. I love the same eye make-up. I’m not a fad person. I still have everything I had then. That’s one part of me… that’s where my songs come from. There’s a song on the new Fleetwood Mac album [Mirage] that says, ‘Going back to the velvet underground/back to the floor that I love,’ because I always put my bed on the floor. ‘To a room with some lace and paper flowers/ back to the gypsy that I was.’ And that’s San Francisco. That’s the Velvet Underground. Those are the things that I can’t give up.” (Source: In Her Own Words)
Sadly, this song was actually written by Stevie Nicks when a very close friend of hers had just died, Robin Snyder Anderson. “Lightening strikes maybe once, maybe twice... that means one time in your life you find a very good friend, and maybe if you're incredibly lucky, you might find a second. It all comes down to you, means but you have to look very hard.” (Source: In Her Own Words)
The 2nd inspiration for the song is seen in the lines, “You See Your Gypsy” in which Stevie looks back at her younger wistful self.
After Robin had passed away, Stevie married Robin’s husband (Ken Anderson) to help him take care of the son they had together. The marriage didn’t last, the two weren’t in love but they both loved Ken and Robin’s child.
As mentioned previously, the 2nd inspiration to Stevie Nicks behind the song is about loss of innocence. She explained it was written sometime in 1978–1979 when the band had become "very famous, very fast" and so this was her reflecting, “In the old days, before Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey [Buckingham] and I had no money, so we had a king-size mattress, but we just had it on the floor. I had old vintage coverlets on it, and even though we had no money it was still really pretty… Just that and a lamp on the floor, and that was it—there was a certain calmness about it. To this day, when I’m feeling cluttered, I will take my mattress off of my beautiful bed, wherever that may be, and put it outside my bedroom, with a table and a little lamp.”
I’m sure people who’ve heard this song have a completely different interpretation of what is meant to them when it was on in the background. Just wanted to give @YouTheReader a bit about what it meant to Stevie Nicks.
Old Town Scottsdale
The Rooster Cup ventured to Old Town Scottsdale last night. I didn’t get to do much checking out the history of the town so here are some quick facts…
The first business in Old Town was J.L. Davis’ General Store, which opened in 1897. In 1904, Sarah Thomas purchased the store, making it the first female-owned business in town. @YouTheReader I am not related to J.L. Davis if you’re wondering. Scottsdale was officially incorporated as a town in 1951. At that time, the population was 2,000. Scottsdale was initially settled in the late 1880s and named “Orangedale”; the town’s name was changed to Scottsdale in 1894.
Believe it or not, I didn’t end up doing too much Stumblin’ while Gyspying in Old Town Scottsdale. Remember, this is a business trip, so I reviewed my first Guinness Pint in the Pacific time zone at Barstool Scottsdale. I’ll have the Pint&Pen&Paper up for it on Tuesday!
Rooster Cup Day 1 Recap
Like it’s sister event, the Ryder Cup, and son event, the President’s Cup, Day 1 of the Rooster Cup is played in 2 vs. 2 best ball with the matchups. They were decided on Friday night over a closest to the makeshift pin of the Airbnb cornhole bags.
The low scorer of the day shot an 80… his 79th shot of the day was a putt that went in and out, heartbreaking stuff, but should be Noted because it was an impressive round nonetheless. Team Dubbs finished the day with a 2-1 Team Lead. There was some fair share of shrimp talk coming out of Team Weir in our Uber ride coming back from Old Town last night.
1. Took a group photo at the tee. Uncle J moved his ball a few feet from the rocks in the desert. This hole and match is now under protest.
2. Down 1, 3 put.
3. Uncle J, “the greens are severe.”
4. Putted from a downslope on the fringe and the ball completely rolled past the hole to the other end. Massive failure.
5. Uncle V with a great approach shot. Hit the bunker, the beach in Scottsdale is overrated.
6. Won a hole, Skin is heating up.
7. Uncle J said my shot was as “smooth a butter”. First par of the round.
8. Uncle J “hit it a little thin.” Cart Girl is from Cedar Grove, New Jersey.
9. Lost another ball, good 2nd shot but was shooting for 3.
Around the Turn
Uncle V bought a $7 hot dog. ***7.2 Hot Dog score.***
10. Won a hole shooting a 7.
11. Gave one right back, nice par putt by Uncle V.
12. I don’t know if I got a 7 or 8, don’t tell anybody.
13. The desert mountain behind the hole is very majestic. Sunk one of the nicest putts of my life for par to win the hole.
14. Back down to Earth, fell apart out of the tee box.
15. One of the shortest par 3s I’ve seen in the dry heat of Arizona.
16. We had to concede the match but remember this is under protest. Went over the green with 2 6 irons.
17. Par’d a par 4
18. Binked the fairway, ended with a 6.
Broke 100 for the first time shooting a 99.
Uber Home Last Night
Uncle J: “Our top 3 are better than their top 3.”
Uncle V: “Write that down.”
Team Weir’s captain: “We’re so top heavy, our soldiers need to do their job. I know my team.”
Uncle V: “Write that down.”
Team Weir’s captain: “I’m not afraid of their top 2.” (Talking to Uncle J) “You’re consistent, he’s not” in reference to Team Steve’s captain.
Uncle V: “Write that down. Also everybody was giving props to G*llo for shooting a 43 on the front 9, Uncle J shot a 42 and nobody said anything. That ain’t right.”
Team Weir’s captain: “All we were hoping for was a 2-1 lead and what did we do? We did out job.”
Also, Weir said there is not a chance in the Highway to Hell that The Rooster Cup ever has an event at Torrey Pines. He was very disappointed with the treatment of the course, get it together @California.
