Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms out there! Today’s tune on this Sunday Stumblin’ Along is Stumblin’ In by Suzi Quatro and Chris Norman because it’s one of my mom’s favorites.
This song was released in 1978. It was written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn. Chris Norman was the frontman for the band called Smokie. Chapman and Chinn had previously written for Smokie before the band decided to cut ties with the writing tandem. Chapman was producing Suzi Quatro's album “If You Knew Suzi”, which they were recording in Cologne, Germany. By random happenstance, Smokie received an award in nearby Düsseldorf and after the ceremony, Quatro & Chapman joined them at a party where music broke out.
According to Chapman, "Suzi was playing bass, and Chris was there with his arm round her, and they were singing into a mike, and I thought what a fantastic duet they’d make because they looked so great together. The next day, I was in the studio with Suzi, and during a break, I came up with the line, 'Our love is alive'…I looked at Suzi and said 'What about this, with you and Chris? Wouldn’t it be great?' and she said it sounded fantastic.”

Chapman finished writing the song with Chinn, and the duet was included on Quatro's album. This song peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979 at #4 in the US. Prior to Stumblin’ In, Suzi Quatro had never been on the US Top 40 and Smokie’s "Living Next Door To Alice” had reached #25. Stumblin’ In, a song that happened under random happenstance at a party, ended up being the biggest hit for everyone involved. It is a great tune @Mom.

The History of Mother’s Day in the US
Anna Jarvis is the Mother of Mother’s Day in the United States. Born on May 1, 1864, in Webster, West Virginia, Jarvis was 1 of the 13 children. Sadly of the 13 children, Anna was 1 of only 4 to reach adulthood as infant- and child-mortality rates there and throughout Appalachia were extremely high in those days. In 1858, 6 years before Anna was born, her mother Ann Jarvis started organizing Mother’s Day Work Clubs to educate the families in Appalachia. She would give tips such as promoting the use of boiling water to prevent the spread of diseases.
The Jarvis family moved to the newly formed Webster County in West Virginia right around the outbreak of the American Civil War. Webster County was on the border of the Union and Confederate lines. The Battle at Philippi, which took place just 15 miles from Webster County, was one of the earlier battles of the American Civil War. With the population of West Virginia being mixed with loyalties to opposing sides, Anna Jarvis’ mother urged members of the Mother’s Day Work Clubs to remain neutral and to take care of both sides’ soldiers. After the Civil War, Ann Jarvis tried to further reconcile differences by establishing a Mothers’ Friendship Day, where Union and Confederate veterans would break bread.
When Anna Jarvis was 12 years old, her mother was teaching Sunday school classes when she stated the prayer, “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial Mother Day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it.” This had a deep effect on Anna Jarvis, who would go on to state the same prayer at the time of her mother’s memorial service in 1905, and she added to it, “By the grace of God, you shall have that Mothers Day.” This led Anna Jarvis to begin a letter-writing and public-speaking campaign urging local, state, & national figures to support a new holiday. She and her supporters started observing the 2nd Sunday in May for the holiday, which is still the case to this day. Within a decade of her mother’s passing, Anna Jarvis was able to get President Woodrow Wilson to sign Mother’s Day into effect as a national holiday in 1914.
Anna Jarvis’ idea of Mother’s Day was intended to be about a son or daughter honoring their mother, rather than celebrating all mothers. Her intentions behind the holiday were not as communal as she had envisioned. She resented that by the 1920s, the holiday had become centered around cards, flowers, candies, and gift-giving. By 1925, when American War Mothers used the holiday to fundraise, Jarvis crashed the event and was arrested for causing a public disturbance. As if that wasn’t enough, in 1935, Anna Jarvis accused First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt of “crafty plotting” by using Mother’s Day in fundraising material for charities trying to combat high maternal and infant mortality rates. Jeez, sounds like Eleanor was just trying to help. Anyway, Anna Jarvis, the mother of Mother’s Day, would sadly die in debt from taking legal action to end Mother’s Day as a national holiday, and alone in an insane asylum. Sheesh, what a bummer. I suppose the lesson here is not to lawyer up if you start a national holiday. At least she got us a well-deserved holiday.

Game 34 (5/4)
- Rainy Sunday game in the Bronx, which delays the game’s first pitch by about an hour. On the wet hill, Will Warren gets knocked around and can’t escape the 5th inning again. Warren allows 3 earned runs and 2 unearned, while striking out a season-high 8 Rays. Yankees don’t get on the scoreboard until Cody Bellinger hits a 2-run dinger, his 200th career home run. The Yankees turn to Carlos Carrasco in the 7th, who immediately gives up 2 more runs. Down 7-2 in the 8th, Aaron Judge gets a late rally going with a line-drive double into the Right-Center gap. Judge scores on a Paul Goldschmidt single, who later scores on Jorbit Vivas’ 1st career hit, a 2-run single. Yanks fail to complete the comeback in the 9th as Rays’ closer, Peter Fairbanks, strikes out the side. Yankees lose 7-5.
Game 35 (5/5)
- The San Diego Padres aren’t used to too many half-hour rain delays. Carlos Rodon is on the hill in the Bronx on a rainy Cinco de Mayo Monday. The Yanks nearly strike first in the 1st inning as Ben Rice doubles down the RF line and Aaron Judge gets thrown out attempting to score from 1st Base. The Yankees eventually do score first in the 3rd inning when Trent Grisham clubs a 2-run shot. There is a half-hour stoppage of play in the 4th due to the rain, which is right around the time the Knicks go on their wild 3rd Quarter run in Game 1 up in Boston. The Yanks manufacture a run in the 6th as Goldschmidt singles, steals 2nd, reaches 3rd once the ball goes into the outfield, and then scores on an Anthony Volpe sac fly. Carlos Rodon gives the Yankees 6.2 scoreless innings pitched before handing the ball off to Fernando Cruz, who throws 1-pitch splitter. Up 3-0 in the 8th, Aaron Boone goes with Devin Williams, who walks Tyler Wade, gives up a single, and walks Luis Arraez, before Luke Weaver comes in relief. The Padres take a 4-3 lead when all is said and done. Yanks lose.
Game 36 (5/6)
- A pair of former Yankees top prospects matchup as it’s Michael King vs. Clark Schmidt. After the two of them throw 3 scoreless innings, Schmidt balks with the bases loaded and gives up another run on a sac fly in the 4th. Aaron Judge responds with a solo porch job in the bottom half, and Jasson Dominguez drives in Cody Bellinger to tie things at 2-2. The Yankees’ bullpen gives up the lead in the 7th, however, the bats immediately respond with a 10-run inning. Jasson Dominguez got the rally going with a lead-off double, and 12 batters later, Austin Wells capped things off with a Grand Slam. Let the record show that I took my glasses off and only listened to the game during this rally while half asleep. Yanks win 12-3, snapping a 3-game losing streak.
Game 37 (5/7)
- Max Fried allows a solo shot in the 4th inning as his ERA jumps up all the way to 1.05 on the season. Judge drops a fly ball in the 5th, leading to Fried having to get out of a jam. Despite allowing just the 1 run, Fried leaves the game in the 7th on the hook as the losing pitcher because the Yankees are getting no-hit. Cody Bellinger changes all that when he hits one to the upper deck. As soon as the Yankees turn to the bullpen in the 8th, Ian Hamilton and Luke Weaver combine to allow 2 Padres’ runs. Down 3-1 in the bottom half of the 8th, Trent Grisham has a pinch-hit 2-run homer that ties things at 3. The Yankees head to extra innings and hand the ball off to Devin Williams in the 10th. Williams works himself into and out of trouble in the 8th as he walks a guy, hits a guy, and strikes out the side. As he skips into the dugout, Williams shows signs of life as a Yankee, screaming into his glove for the first time. With The Martian as the extra innings invisible runner at 2nd base, Oswaldo Cabrera gets Dominguez over to 3rd Base on a sac bunt. This sets up JC Escarra’s first career walk-off as he hits a deep sac fly to Left Field and the Yankees win 4-3.
Game 38 (5/9)
- Yanks play their first 10 PM ET game on the West Coast as they travel to Sacramento to play the Athletics. The minor league ballpark is just 45 miles from where Aaron Judge grew up, so it’s a bit of a homecoming for the Yankees captain. In the top of the 1st, Judge drills one off the left field wall for a double, but the Yanks fail to bring any runs across. They get on the scoreboard in the 4th inning when Paul Goldschmidt and Jasson Dominguez hit back-to-back solo homers. Will Warren retires the first 10 A’s without any baserunners, gets into some trouble in the 4th, but gets out of it with back-to-back strikeouts. The Yanks tack on a 3rd run on a Dominguez sac fly. The 22-year-old hits his first career right-handed home run in the 7th inning. The Martian comes up one more time in the 8th inning, crushing a grand slam home run to make it 10-0 Yankees. Dominguez becomes the youngest Yankee in franchise history to homer 3 times in one game. Will Warren also pitches a career-high 7.1 innings with 7 strikeouts. Yanks win
Game 39 (5/10)
- In the 2nd inning, Anthony Volpe commits the cardinal sin of making the 3rd Out at 3rd Base while trying to tag up on a sac fly to LF. Within the first 3 innings, Carlos Rodon gives up 2 homers, resulting in 4 runs allowed. Volpe boots a Double Play ball, but Rodon gets out of trouble. Aaron Judge gets the Yankees on the board in the 4th inning with a solo shot. The Knicks are playing in the middle of yet another awful 1st half. Judge hits another solo home run in the 6th inning, which leads to a big inning with Volpe doubling and Oswald Peraza homering to give the Yankees a 6-4 lead. The Yanks turn to the pen in the 7th, and in a rare instance this year, Fernando Cruz struggles as he gives up a double and a 3-run homer to blow the lead. Yanks and Knicks lose. The Yanks are 22-17 at the near quarter mark of the season.
Move to Make?
- The expected move this week is for the Yankees to send down 2B Jorbit Vivas as DJ LeMahieu is set to make his return from a calf strain. In 8 games between Double-A & Triple-A, DJLM has collected 11 hits in 23 at-bats (.478 batting average) with a double and a homer. While he’s far removed from his MVP-candidate campaigns, DJLM should help balance the lineup as a righty. Tough break for Vivas to get sent down after only about a week of run, but the other option would be to DFA Pablo Reyes, and I think the Yanks value this positional versatility.
