Gotta be honest, the other two songs on Friday and Saturday All Night were a setup for today’s tune of Tourist’s We Stayed Up All Night ft. Ardyn.
I have no idea how this song ended up on Spotify, but I’m glad it was on my shuffle last week when I was thinking of something for the weekend. The beat switch/drop after “out we run” is cinematic.
Tourist is an English EDM musician and songwriter. In 2015, he won a Grammy Song of the Year Award, co-writing Sam Smith’s Stay With Me. Ardyn is a twin-sibling duo of Rob and Katy Pearson from Gloucestershire. The indie folk band’s name means “enthusiastic” in Latin.
I could be wrong, but this tune seems to have the potential to, at the very least, be an elite background song for a car commercial. Just saying.
On to the sports…
Game 3 (3/30)
- It’s a freezing Sunday after a 70s Saturday. Cody Bellinger starts the game off, making a nice over-the-shoulder catch in Centerfield for out #1. Marcus Stroman gives up a 1st inning run but gets out of trouble by striking out former Yankee Jake Bauers. Paul Goldschmidt is back in the leadoff spot and he singles immediately. Aaron Judge hits another home run. 2-1 after 1. Ben Rice hits an upper-decker to Right Field in the 2nd. In the 3rd inning, Milwaukee has had enough of Judge, walking him on 4 pitches, only to set up Jazz Chisholm for a 2-run dinger. 5-1 Yanks. Bauers eventually gets some revenge on the Yankees with a 2-run homer off Stroman in the 4th. The Yankee starter can’t get out of the 5th inning as Tim Hill strikes out Christian Yelich on some lefty-on-lefty crime. In the 6th inning, YES Network brings their CEO into the booth to explain to the audience how Comcast is dropping YES. If FUBO TV ever thinks of dropping YES Network, there will be hell to pay. Judge and Jazz manufacture a couple of runs on some non-home run situational hitting. Jazz then blows the doors off the game in the 7th, drilling a 3-run no-doubter. The Yankees win 12-3 to sweep the Brewers in their opening ‘25 series.
Game 4 (4/1)
- Will Warren makes his regular-season debut against the Arizona Diamondbacks. I missed most of the game at bars in Brooklyn but was following along on the Gotham Sports App. While at Highbury’s Pub, Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe homered. When I got home, Michael Kay and Paul O’Neill were reminiscing about the 2001 World Series Game 5 “Paul O’Neill” chant that my uncles Robby and Tommy started. Yanks lead 4-3 heading into the 8th inning until Mark Leiter Jr. allows a grand slam to Eugenio Suárez really kills the mood. The Yankees lose 7-5, no 162-0 this season.
Game 5 (4/2)
- Caught the 4th inning on Amazon Prime on my phone after 3 pints on Broadway in Manhattan. Zac Gallen’s knuckle curve is filthy, striking out everybody. Got home in the 6th inning, and the first guy I saw on base was Oswaldo Cabrera, who reached on a dropped 3rd strike. Carlos Rodon gave up a big fly early but went 6 innings and was relieved by Yoendrys Gomez. Yo-Go went 3 innings of scoreless long relief and his stuff looked solid. Gallen goes 6.2 innings while striking out 13 Yankee bats. Down 4-0 in the 9th, Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge start the inning with back-to-back singles before Volpe porches a 3-run homer. The Yanks still lost 4-3, but Volpe’s homer at least made things interesting. A lot of strikeouts, very feast or famine.
Game 6 (4/3)
- Carlos Carrasco makes his first Yankee start after debuting out of the bullpen over the weekend. Ben Rice gets things cooking with a leadoff double to straight away CF. Then Cody Bellinger walks, Aaron Judge homers into the Yankees’ bullpen, the Martian singles, and Trent Grisham gaps one to score him. 4-0 NY after the 1st inning. In the 3rd, Volpe collects his first non-home run, and Trent Grisham porches his first big fly of the season. 6-1 Yanks. Jazz joins the part in the 4th inning, taking one deep into the RF stands. 9-3 after 4 innings. Carlos Carrasco gives the Yankees 5.1 innings, effectively throwing 1st pitch strikes. In the 7th inning, Arizona gets a rally going off Ryan Yarbrough as he walks his first 2 batters and eventually gives up a grand slam. The Yankee bats fall asleep as only JC Escarra’s first big league hit on a 7th-inning is the Noteworthy. Aaron Boone turns to Luke Weaver to get a 4-out save as Devin Williams’ fiancee is due with their first kid. Weaver gets the job done. Yanks win 9-7 to salvage the final game against the D-Backs in the Bronx.
Game 7 (4/4)
- The Yankees play their first game on the road as the Pirates host their Opening Day. The Pittsburgh crowd is pissed off out the gate as chants of “Sell the team” can be heard before the first pitch. Ben Rice gets things cooking with a leadoff line drive single up the middle. Aaron Judge, in his 1,000th career game, works a walk. Unfortunately, the Yankees can’t capitalize in the 1st as Jazz and Goldschmidt go down looking while Austin Wells flies out. In the bottom half of the 1st, Aaron Judge makes a nice catch against the wall and lands awkwardly. The Martian doubles down the RF line in the 2nd inning and scores as Oswaldo Cabrera dunks in a 2-run single to get the Yanks on the board. The very next inning, the Yankees get a 2-out rally going out of thin air as Volpe gets hit by a pitch, Grisham gets an infield single, and The Martian gets an RBI broken-bat single. Cabrera then tacks on another RBI single through the SS-3B hole. Max Fried allows a solo shot in the 3rd inning off Bryan Reynolds but is otherwise effective as he gives the Yanks 5.2 innings with 6 strikeouts. In the 6th inning, with the score 7-1, the YES booth of Michael Kay and John Flaherty had a bit of craic as Flaherty admits he’s walked into a wall at a hotel before - in response to Freddie Freeman injuring himself slipping in the shower. It sounds like Guinness may have been involved in Flaherty’s late-night mishap. Anyway, Aaron Judge launched his 6th home run of the season, and on his 1,000th game in pinstripes, his 321 career homers match the great Babe Ruth. The Yanks win 9-4.
Game 8 (4/5)
- Rain game in Pittsburgh. In the 2nd inning, Jazz gets hit by pitch, steals 2nd base, and scores on an Austin Wells single. Trent Grisham hits a solo shot in the 3rd to put the Yankees up 2-0. Marcus Stroman struggles in the 4th inning, giving up 4 runs, including a double by Ke'Bryan Hayes. The 3rd Baseman is the son of former Yankees 3rd Baseman Charlie Hayes. Down 4-2 in the 5th, The Martian batting right-handed doubles down the RF line. This leads to Grisham’s 2nd homer of the day, a 3-run shot to opposite field. Volpe later blows the game open with a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double to put the Yanks up 8-4. The Yankees win 10-4 to start their season with a 6-2 record.
What’s the move?
With it being this early in the year and how the lineup is hitting, not too many changes need to be made. Interestingly enough, the Yankees signed a depth bat in Cooper Hummel on Friday night. Hummel is a switch-hitter who can play all over the diamond. My read is they’d like to see if he can play 3rd and platoon with Oswaldo Cabrera against lefties.
