Today’s tune is Linkin Park’s Shadow of the Day because it took me an hour to think of a song that had anything to do with Groundhog Day.
Not going to lie, the lyrics are pretty dark. I was looking for something a bit happier, but there really aren't many shadow or ground references to pick from. Definitely a lane for any artists trying to cash in on a Groundhog Day jingle. Somebody should really get on that.
Shadow of the Day was released in ‘07 and peaked at #27 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song shares a very similar chord progression to U2’s With or Without You.
On to a bit about the significance of the Groundhog’s shadow…
Groundhog Day
Groundhogs are rodents that are also known as woodchucks or whistlepigs. At an average adult weight of 11 pounds, they can grow to the size of a fat cat. Do not get them confused with gophers, which are smaller, or beavers, which evolved into aquatic mammals, but they all come from the squirrel family tree. They got their nickname “whistlepigs” because when alarmed, they’ll use a high-pitched whistle to alert their colony of danger. The “woodchuck” nickname is derived from the Algonquin people, who named them “wuchuck.”
Elite diggers, groundhogs are known for their extensive underground burrows. These holes typically have a diameter of about a foot, but the tunnels can range from three to twenty yards (2.7 to 18.3 meters). Within their burrow system, they’ll often have a sleeping chamber, a nursery spot for the younglings, and their own separate bathroom. Since most rabbits and skunks don’t dig themselves, they’ll oftentimes take over abandoned groundhog burrows. The underground tunnels can sometimes have up to 11 different entrances, so good luck filling one up, they’ll just make another. These dens serve two purposes: a safe haven from predators (coyotes, foxes, & hawks) and a place for hibernating over the winter.

The earliest origins of Groundhog Day can be traced to the holiday Imbolc (Brigid’s Day). Over in Ireland, there was a traditional Gaelic festival celebrated on February 1-2, which marked the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. In Celtic tradition, fire was used to symbolize renewal, fertility, and purification. Therefore, candles were common at Imbolc. The word “Imbolc” also translates to “in the belly” in Gaelic. During the pre-Christian Celtic world, Imbolc honored a pagan goddess named Brigid, who was associated with fertility and the coming of warmer weather. In the 5th Century, an Irish lass, who happened to be named Brigid, founded the first nunnery in Ireland, in Kildare. Along with St. Patrick and St. Columba, St. Brigid is one of Ireland’s three patron saints. St. Brigid is considered the patron saint of dairy farmers, cattle, midwives, and babies, which sticks with the spring fertility theme. To this day, there is a five-day celebration called the Brigid, Spirit of Kildare Festival, where she founded the original nunnery.

Europeans also celebrated a holiday called Candlemas. A Christian feast held to celebrate the forty days after the birth of Christ, the earliest reference to the festival comes from Jerusalem in the 4th century. An element of the festival was that Christians would take a candle to church to have it blessed, which would bring blessings to their household for the rest of the winter. There was also a popular English folk song linked with Candlemas that included lyrics such as…
"If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Come, Winter, have another flight;
If Candlemas bring clouds and rain,
Go, Winter, and come not again."
Eventually, the interpretation of Candlemas Day having a relationship with the winter weather brought about a new tradition from Germany. The Germans added animals to the lore by stating that if a hedgehog saw its shadow on Candlemas Day, there would be a “Second Winter” or six more weeks of rough weather.

Once the Germans settled in America, they brought over their own customs and traditions. Pennsylvania was particularly known for its German-American connection, so it makes sense that the very first Groundhog Day was held in Punxsutawney, PA. The first time Groundhog Day was reported on was at Gobbler’s Knob in 1886 by the Punxsutawney Spirit. There, a group of hunters known as “Weathers Wags” went on a groundhog hunt. By 1887, Groundhog Day had a larger audience with more people willing to make the trek to Gobbler’s Knob to see the weather forecast. In the early days of the celebration, it is almost certain that the groundhog wasn’t just a weather aficionado, but the main dish.

By the early 20th Century, Groundhog Day had become a national news story, with the animal appearing on the front pages of newspapers with their forecast. Much to the relief of the groundhogs, people eventually found it a bit uncouth to celebrate its finding only to eat it, so they let it live and gave it the name Punxsutawney Phil. That said, to this day, Punxsutawney Phil still gets some death threats, especially when he predicts six more weeks of winter. Many people are saying Punxsutawney Phil also played an instrumental part in bringing an end to Prohibition, since he threatened to impose 60 weeks of winter on the community if he wasn’t allowed a drink.
