Today’s tune on the 1st Volume of the 70th Week of Pint&Pen&Paper is This Girl by Cookin' on 3 Burners and Kungs.
Holy shit, that’s a mouthful to read!
The original release of this song was in ‘09 by Cookin’ on 3 Burners with the vocals of Kylie Auldist. It was a slower version of funk and soul. Kungs, the French DJ, would remix the ‘09 version in ‘16 and it took off reaching #3 in Ireland, #2 in the UK, #26 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #1 in France.
Kungs told Billboard, “I just heard this track on YouTube and I fell in love with it. I told myself that I really had to remix it and to add my personal touch to it; I didn't expect such success. It was a strange blend and I thought that people wouldn't understand the track, so I was really happy when I saw that the radio was playing it."
Kung’s remixed track of Cookin’ on 3 Burners’ This Girl was on in the background at one of these fine drinking establishments in The City.
The female narrator’s love can’t be bought…
Real love means more to her than money. A concept one would think most would agree with.
This Girl was the first GIF I found when entering “Dancing Woman” on the Google. Her name was Joan Crawford and the show of the GIF was The Three Stooges. The episode was called Dancing Lady and it came out in 1933. Miss Crawford was a doll in her day, winning an Oscar in 1946 for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in Mildred Pierce. There were a bunch of other options to pick from, but why not give Joan Crawford a bit of recognition? Her jig fit right in with the jazz element of This Girl.
It appears like this guy is rich and thinks she can be bought. Good on her to stick to her own values.
This Girl sounds like a keeper, Week to Week Notes sure does play a ton of variety of songs on in the background. She sounds like the perfect match, such a shame she won’t be on the market very long!
Nice dancing tune for a Tuesday! I never fully listened to the lyrics when this gets played, I just thought the beat was nice for a spring day.
On to the pints…
#GuinnessChallengeSeason
@Kids don’t try this at home. Not just because you’re underage and will have plenty of pints to drink if that ends up being your thing when you’re older but also because Guinness is actually best served in a pint glass from a tap. A pint of Guinness varies depending on the drinking establishment. If the keg it sits in is rarely poured, it can lead to some underwhelming taste. Rather than stealing gimmicks, I’d like to start taking Notes while drinking Guinness. My grandfather from Connemara, whom I never got the chance to meet, Thomas Davis, used to drink pints and by all accounts was a self-taught thinker. The one rule I’ve imposed on myself is that I will only have 1 pint per sitting from each establishment I review, so @AnyoneWorrying, don’t worry about my drinking habits. The Guinness Challenge is to “cut the G” on your first sip (more like a gulp and a half). If this is your first time hearing about it, I didn’t come up with the fun challenge @YouTheReader can try the next time you have a Guinness. The 0.0 to 10.0 scale will be extraordinarily nuanced but as a reference point, the only perfect 10.0 I plan ever to give out is at the Guinness Factory in Dublin one day.
Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: They have a comedy show about to start in a half hour. I gotta head home and write, but this looks like a popular spot. They have a plethora of wines and liquors behind the bar. These are my first pints of Guinness in The City as an uncle. How long do you think it’ll take for Shane to ask me to have a baseball catch? Not for nothing, but Decker understood the concept of fetch at 4 months old. I’m sitting next to the sound guy for the comedy show. They have comfy couches in the corner and a great happy hour.
Established in ‘06, Ten Degrees is located in the heart of East Village. The bar offers an intimate and unique style. They have curated cocktails, an extensive selection of wines from all over the world, and beer by the bottle or can. Their Happy Hour during the work week starts at 5 PM and runs until 8. They are also open late every night until 4 AM. For this spring, they have patio tables in the front. Ten Degrees is also perfect for private parties as they have an “Astor Hall” or “St. Marks Lounge” that can accommodate a wide range of 6 to 200 people. They also use the space for stand-up comedy, which was going on during that Tuesday night in November. I look forward to grabbing another drink at Ten Degrees again!
Song On In The Background: Read My Mind by The Killers
Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: Emory Eagles college banner on one of the bar pillars. Judy Z’s is home to their world-famous chipotle mayo sauce. They originated in Brooklyn. Appears to be an after-work office happy hour crowd. The bar room is shaped like a triangle as they are on the corner of an intersection. They also have Michigan, Ohio State, Buffalo, and Arizona college banners as well. Sports bar. Christmas decorations are up, they are ready.
The original Judy Z’s is in Brooklyn, but the one in Greenwich Village has been rated one of the best sports bars in the neighborhood. Every week, Judy Z’s has Wednesday night trivia starting at 8 pm. On Thursdays, they do $1 oysters and $10 martinis. Fridays are Ladies Nights where they do 2-for-1 drinks for all the women. Saturdays are for the brunch and beer specials. On Sundays, they host “Slumber Party Movie Day” when if you wear PJs to the bar you get specials and prizes. Good bit of variety and they always have sports on the TVs. I might be burying the lead here, but their homemade Chipotle Mayo is famous. Last, but not least, Judy Z’s is a pro-doggo establishment. I look forward to grabbing another drink at Judy Z’s again!
Song On In The Background: This Girl by Kungs, Cookin’ On 3 Burners
Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: Bianca is bartending. This used to be called Fat Cat, it unfortunately went under during the pandemic so they renamed it Cellar Dog. Left Hand Milk Stout is the substitute. Pool Hall and Live Jazz bands every night. Bianca loves the bar, started in August, and loves New York. Cellar Dog is a staple in the neighborhood. Their chicken quesadilla and pretzel are recommended. Chess boards were painted on the tables. Left Hand stout is sweet. They don’t serve liquor because there is some law they can’t because it’s right next to a church.
Cellar Dog, formerly Fat Cat, is an awesome basement bar in West Village. There are loads of activities down there from Pool to Chess to Fooseball to Shuffleboard to Ping Pong. They offer live jazz music and have an International Jazz Day of Live Shows featuring Edud Asherie along with Richard Clements tonight, April 30th from 5 to midnight. If you can’t make it, they also have Live Jazz every night at 7 PM. Last but not least, Cellar Dog is a pro-doggo establishment where you can submit a photo of your pup and be featured on the Dogs of Cellar Dog Wall. Big fan of the concept. I look forward to grabbing another drink at Cellar Dog again!
