Motion Sickness | Gallow Green | Olly Olly Market | Walter’s Bar | YouTube Rabbithole
Alright @YouTheReader,
Last week I was lucky enough to be invited on Straight Outta JerZey with Joe Zapata. Joey is from Westwood, New Jersey. He and his brothers grew up with my mom & uncles so it was very cool to get to talk about Week to Week Notes with him. The Zapata Brothers started and grew a boxing, combat, and MMA-centered podcast that features some very notable legendary guests, I highly recommend checking their channels out. (Straight Outta JerZey & The Zapata Brand Boxing Podcast) Hopefully, Joey will let me back on again sometime to talk sports. (I swear I only brought up Taylor Swift once.)
Today’s tune is Motion Sickness by Phoebe Bridgers, it was playing at one of these fine drinking establishments. Bridgers as an artist has a very melancholy distinct style, but it’ll get balanced out with tomorrow’s overtly happy tune.
See it is a bit melancholy. Still a good song if you’re ever in a bit of a funk and looking for a voice you can relate with.
Car motion sickness is the worst. The Connemara hilly and bumpy roads with my dad speeding led to plenty of upset stomachs as a kid. This song though is serious in that it’s about the aftermath of a relationship so a different kind of pit to the stomach.
So after doing a bit of research, Bridgers was in a relationship with an American in the industry who was a bit older and would fake an English accent.
Honestly, the other options to pick from were “Here We Go Again” and “Take Me Out.” Two mid-2000s tunes that were solid, but I figure some of the fellas may not know much about Phoebe Bridgers, who is an excellent singer-songwriter… even if her music makes me sorta melancholy!
On to the pints…
#GuinnessChallengeSeason
@Kids don’t try this at home. Not just because you’re underage and will have plenty of pints to drink if that ends up being your thing when you’re older but also because Guinness is actually best served in a pint glass from a tap. A pint of Guinness varies depending on the drinking establishment. If the keg it sits in is rarely poured, it can lead to some underwhelming taste. Rather than stealing gimmicks, I’d like to start taking Notes while drinking Guinness. My grandfather from Connemara, whom I never got the chance to meet, Thomas Davis, used to drink pints and by all accounts was a self-taught thinker. The one rule I’ve imposed on myself is that I will only have 1 pint per sitting from each establishment I review, so @AnyoneWorrying, don’t worry about my drinking habits. The Guinness Challenge is to “cut the G” on your first sip (more like a gulp and a half). If this is your first time hearing about it, I didn’t come up with the fun challenge @YouTheReader can try the next time you have a Guinness. The 0.0 to 10.0 scale will be extraordinarily nuanced but as a reference point, the only perfect 10.0 I plan ever to give out is at the Guinness Factory in Dublin one day.

Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: Gallow Green (cocktail) “is like drinking green juice with tequila. The Northern Lights cocktail is a bit darker.” Bellhaven Black is the closest thing they have to Guinness and I just went up to the rooftop of the McKittrick Hotel so I’m thirsty. All their beers are locally made in New York State. There are a lot of Ivey plants up here, a cool setting for a drink. They use the whole building for their top show called “Sleep Jo More”, otherwise they only use their top venue for performances. Honesty hour, the Bellhaven black is too milky sweet for my liking I’m fiending for some Black Irish Gold.
Located in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, Gallow Green is a garden rooftop at the top of McKittrick Hotel. They close for the winter, but it’s a cool spot for the spring, summer, and fall. Instead of Gallow Green, you can still hit up the Manderley Bar and The Overlook Bar in the hotel. Sleep No More is an award-winning theatrical experience of Shakespeare’s Scottish tragedy. You go room to room around the fictitious hotel where there is a ton of acrobatic choreography and every room is filled with a ton of detail. Pretty cool and unique experience. I look forward to grabbing another drink at Gallow Green again!

Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: This is Bar Avant in Olly Olly Market. Bob Ross ASMR on the TV. He is painting a horizon, shocking. This is a whole marketplace setup. Their world-famous blue margarita is recommended. Not a lot of schtick on this pint, a bit liquidy. This is like a community center with trivia and a library. Boy Blue Good and chopped cheese are recommended. Today’s trivia night is on elementary school teaching. So far I am acing the US History thus far and have no idea how the hell they do math anymore.
The Olly Olly Market is a very unique food hall concept located in Chelsea. They have a wide range of storefronts located in the food hall as well as a nice bar to grab a drink. A cool setting where you can grab kebabs, drink a pint, and either sing karaoke or play trivia. I look forward to grabbing another drink at Olly Olly again soon!

Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: Darts in the back. The bartender just got the guys next to me a round of beers and he was rewarded with a fine tip. Dingle jersey in the back of the bar hanging up. By the bathroom, they have the old picture of all the Doors of Ireland that my parents had back home when I was a kid. This is a Marine-owned bar. They also have a Kerry jersey hanging up as well. The mother’s side is from County Dingle, they go back home a couple of times a year. Bar’s bar, but you’re welcome to bring in food.
Walter’s Bar is a small, low-key neighborhood joint. They serve great draft beers and snacks. I love the Irish doors poster, great authentic touch, reminds me of my youth. They also have a darts and pool table that had plenty of patrons playing. I look forward to grabbing another pint of Guinness at Walter’s Bar again soon!
