Party All The Time | Poe’s Tavern | Fly’s Tie Pub | The Wine Bar Jax | YouTube Rabbithole
Alright @YouTheReader,
This Pint&Pen&Paper is the final edition in Jacksonville Beach. Last we left off was at Pete’s Tavern listening to 6 Foot 7 Foot and I was 7 pints deep into the night. I usually drink responsibly but it was my last night in Duval. Today’s tune is PATT (Party All The Time) by Sharam, which came out in ‘06, but I just found out it was a remix of Eddie Murphy’s 1985 Party All The Time. Here are the lyrics…
I thought this song was amazing, almost spiritual awakening-level good, while I was getting 3 sheets to the wind at one of these fine drinking establishments….
On to the pints…
#GuinnessChallengeSeason
@Kids don’t try this at home. Not just because you’re underage and will have plenty of pints to drink if that ends up being your thing when you’re older but also because Guinness is actually best served in a pint glass from a tap. A pint of Guinness varies depending on the drinking establishment. If the keg it sits in is rarely poured, it can lead to some underwhelming taste. Rather than stealing gimmicks, I’d like to start taking Notes while drinking Guinness. My grandfather from Connemara, whom I never got the chance to meet, Thomas Davis, used to drink pints and by all accounts was a self-taught thinker. The one rule I’ve imposed on myself is that I will only have 1 pint per sitting from each establishment I review, so @AnyoneWorrying, don’t worry about my drinking habits. The Guinness Challenge is to “cut the G” on your first sip (more like a gulp and a half). If this is your first time hearing about it, I didn’t come up with the fun challenge @YouTheReader can try the next time you have a Guinness. The 0.0 to 10.0 scale will be extraordinarily nuanced but as a reference point, the only perfect 10.0 I plan ever to give out is at the Guinness Factory in Dublin one day.

Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: Named after Edgar Allan Poe. His portraits are up all over the walls. The Sleeper and Old Fashioned cocktails are recommended. On the menu, they have his life story, which as a writer I should know… “He died alone, impoverished, and drunk at 40, yet left an incredible legacy on American Literature.” Wow, so that sounds awesome, where do I sign up? Or is it a blood oath? The nachos are recommended.
Jeez, well as you can see, after 8 pints the dark humor gets unlocked. Edgar Allan Poe’s Burger was voted the in Atlantic Beach. They also have locations in North Carolina and South Carolina. Edgar Allen Poe was born in Boston but spent most of his writing career in New York. He lived around Fordham University in the Bronx back in the days when it was still St. John’s College. One cool factoid that kind of blows my mind is that Edgar Allan Poe likely dined at President Thomas Jefferson’s home while Poe was a student at UVA. Thomas Jefferson established the school and frequently invited University students to his Monticello property. Accounts say that Poe also attended Jefferson’s funeral, as he was a student at UVA at the time of Jefferson’s passing in 1826. (Monticello) Also, just want to add - look at how cute the pup’s dog bandana is.

Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: Chris is the bartender. He is a Jaguars fan and thinks Jags are winning the Super Bowl. The owners’ last names are Flynn and Tierneys so Fly Tie is a great name for a bar. Chris has been working here for 6.5 years, “This is a family and neighborhood bar.” He recommends the Coors and Shot of whiskey. Many regulars and other service industry professionals come here to get their fix. They do Sunday brunch for football. Behind the bar are dollar bills and they have a DJ with a booth.
Fly’s Tie is an old-school dive bar that has the exterior of an Irish Cottage. It is an old-school, cigars-inside type of joint. For the winter, it’s a great spot as they have a fireplace. They also have live Irish music sessions. Nice pub in Jacksonville, they serve a nice pint of Guinness!
Song On In The Background: It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere by Jimmy Buffett
Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: Might be the last spot tonight, emphasis on might. Google Maps says it’s a 20-minute walk from here to AirBNB and let’s see if there is another spot along the way, why not? Content is king. Sarah is the bartender. She’s from Orlando but likes Jacksonville. The Wine Bar does live music on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. She recommends their charcuterie board. Her favorite wines that she recommends are Hacienda-Spanish Red Wine or Matua White Sauv Blanc.
The Wine Bar in Jax had great live music going on, but the news that Jimmy Buffett passed away had just broken so I had to play some of his music on in the background. They have a Happy Hour from 4-7 PM with great deals. The Wine Bar also hosts Blackjack on Mondays, Wednesday Ladies’ Night, and Karaoke Nights on Thursdays. They have some excellent wine, champagne, and cold beer!
Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: Not that I was expecting a hero’s welcome or anything but hey somebody’s gotta have a pint in every bar at Jacksonville Beach and tell you which serves their Guinness in draft, canned, or bottle. That was a long run-on sentence that we’ll pretend was creative. I am drunk.
I committed my own cardinal sin of ending a night on bottled Guinness. Ginger’s Place is a spot where the locals go. It is a “word of mouth” type of bar that I just so happened to Stumble Along en route to the Air BnB. Get this though, it’s also haunted. The spirit of a former burlesque dancer haunts the old cocktail bar. Built in the 1950s, the bar was once a dress shop where mannequins looking out from the windows would draw people in, today people see the face of Ginger Payson staring back at them. Ginger Payson was the former burlesque dancer who eventually owned the place. A medium visited Ginger’s Place and discovered that 13 spirits were residing in the building. I’m just learning about this now, I was hammered when I said not to get the bottled Guinness, this is just terrific that I gave a bar with ghosts a 3.5 Guinness score…
