Headlights | Pig ‘N Whistle on 48th | The Elgin | McKenna’s Pub
Alright @YouTheReader,
This song was on in the background at one of these fine drinking establishments. As soon as I heard it I immediately knew I was going to use it for a Pint&Pen&Paper. I don’t know if it feels gimmicky on your end, but for me, the songs with Week to Week Notes have completely changed how I listen to the lyrics. Kind of cool, kind of crazy, but whatever.
“Headlights” by Robin Schulz featuring Ilsey came out in ‘15. This song did pretty well in Europe while peaking on the charts at 17 on the US Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic. I remember listening to it a ton during the first week of my junior year of college, sorry “sylly week.” We had a balcony in Albany so it was definitely played on there.
Anyway, sorry for rambling. if you don’t mind I’ll have some fun with this one.
You got me. Guilty as charge.
Yeah, I don’t know, we’ll see about that…
Hey, I understand your point but that is easier said than done. If I’m not willing to put myself out there to play the fool then people get tired of reading the same story. Wait is this about my threading habits? Do you realize I got 600 followers on thread this past weekend from just sitting on my arse clicking buttons like a Game Boy compared to 6 months of meeting people in person where I barely got half that amount? Sure, I followed 6,000 people (10% follow-back rate) and got restricted for following too many people at once, but that’s another 6,000 people all across America that saw the username @You_The_Reader with the Week to Week Notes logo. 600+ were interested enough to follow it. Of course, I’m much more proud of meeting people face-to-face for a Pint&Pen&Paper, but yeah I didn’t get thrown in Zuck’s Meta Verse jail for 3 days without bail because I was liking mass amounts of bikini pics. There was a method to the madness. I’ll explain my thread life experience tomorrow!
I guess you’re right but hey at least I don’t lie to @YouTheReader. I probably do write some of my better Notes when I just put my head down and not look up at the headlights. That said, petty controversy like my new beef with @Zuck & his minions ain’t hurting anybody and I’m willing to black sheep this bit.
Wait, what are you going on about now?
I’m sorry you lost me, but I love the beat and you have an excellent voice @Ilsey.
Alright, bring on the pints…
Guinness Challenge Season #1
@Kids don’t try this at home. Not just because you’re underage and will have plenty of pints to drink if that ends up being your thing when you’re older but also because Guinness is actually best served in a pint glass from a tap. A pint of Guinness varies depending on the drinking establishment. If the keg it sits in is rarely poured, it can lead to some underwhelming taste. Rather than stealing gimmicks, I’d like to start taking Notes while drinking Guinness. My grandfather from Connemara, who I never got the chance to meet, Thomas Davis, used to drink pints and by all accounts was a self-taught thinker. The one rule I’ve imposed on myself is that I will only have 1 pint per sitting from each establishment I review, so @AnyoneWorrying, don’t worry about my drinking habits. The Guinness Challenge is to “cut the G” on your first sip (more like a gulp and a half). If this is your first time hearing about it, I didn’t come up with the fun challenge @YouTheReader can try the next time you have a Guinness. The 0.0 to 10.0 scale will be extraordinarily nuanced but as a reference point, the only perfect 10.0 I plan ever to give out is at the Guinness Factory in Dublin one day.
Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: Jake, Mikey, and Noah sitting next to me. They are all here to go to the Adidas store for tracksuits. Tulane and UPenn grads. Love sports. Noah’s guy was Donovan McNabb, Mickey’s was Andruw Jones, and Jane was LeBron James. They are originally from Atlanta and Philly, they now live in Williamsburg and East Village. Love it, “Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and pizza.” They claimed that “Whoever wins the Lakers series will win the championship.”
@YouTheReader these boys were in their sunglasses at night phase in life. They gave me their numbers and asked me to join their “Random Athlete Group chat” where they just add people and tell them to spit out a random lineup of players from the ‘90s and ‘00s. I would have absolutely Alpha’d that group chat, it’s for the best they didn’t let me in it. Anyway, located steps from Rockefeller Center, Times Square and Radio City Music Hall – Pig ‘N’ Whistle has been at the heart of midtown Manhattan since 1969. The establishment has been recently renovated to pay homage to the Art Deco style of Rockefeller Center and the staff bar on board the iconic Queen Mary, from which it takes its name. Pig ‘N Whistle Public House has many great Irish modern plates and plenty of cocktails to go along with a nice pint of Guinness. I look forward to grabbing another pint of Guinness at Pig ‘N Whistle Public House again soon!

Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: Mike is the bartender. Grew up in Teaneck, The Elgin opened up in August ‘19 and he’s been here since the start. Cheeseburger eggrolls are their hallmark item. The paper plane is the recommended drink, “I’m a whiskey guy and it’s a whiskey-forward cocktail.” Mike really got into NASCAR during COVID because they were one of the first back. He grew up in a Giants household and would’ve been killed if he wasn’t a Giants fan. Doctor Hosack named this area Botanical Gardens and he was from Elgin, Scotland.
The Elgin bar sits on the site of Doctor David Hosack’s former botanic garden. In the summer of 1804, as Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr prepared to take their bitter political differences to the dueling ground, there was one thing they could agree on. The doctor in attendance at the duel would be David Hosack, family physician to both the Hamiltons and the Burrs. Hosack, then thirty-four years old, was the most innovative doctor in New York and already on his way to national fame for his tireless work building the young country’s cultural and scientific institutions. Burr shot Hamilton on a New Jersey dueling ground in Weehawken and Hosack tried desperately to keep Hamilton alive as they were rowed back across the river to New York City. Hamilton died the next day, July 12, 1804. Hosack was asked to conduct the autopsy to determine the path of Burr’s bullet. In 1801, he began work on that garden by buying twenty acres of rolling Manhattan farmland three and a half miles north of New York City. Hosack was a native New Yorker, but he named it the Elgin Botanic Garden, in honor of his father’s hometown of Elgin, Scotland. Hosack used his botanical garden to conduct some of the first systematic pharmaceutical research in the United States and to train the next generation of American doctors and botanists. - Victoria Johnson author of American Eden. 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2…
@YouTheReader at least this City Light told me I got to plan.
Song On In The Background: Listen To Your Heart by Roxette
Notes if you can’t read my sloppy scribble: Established in 1932. Older Knicks fans next to me are having a heated discussion about how the team “needs to take it to the hole more.” 2 for 1 Happy Hour and they even give you a poker chip. Jimmy Butler is now the topic of conversation between the elder Knicks fans. Burgers, hot dogs, and paninis are recommended. Dani is the bartender, she’s been working at McKenna’s for 6 months. Cosmos is her favorite drink to make. They have a famous Happy Hour from 11 AM to 7 PM followed by a late night Happy Hour from midnight to 2 AM 7 days a week. Their jukebox is popular, “the crowd sets to play what they want to hear.”
McKenna’s has one of the best Happy Hours in NYC. They also have a famous half-pound burger, it has stood the test of time so you need to try it out. The cocktail menu is also fun with options such as Boozy Lemonade (Raspberry Vodka, Lemon/ Lime Soda, Lime Juice, Lemonade, Redbull), Princess Peach (Absolut Peach, Pineapple Juice, Cranberry Juice), and a Dirty Palmer (Sweet Tea Vodka and Lemonade) as well as a McKenna’s House Sangria. I love that they give you a poker chip for your 2nd drink on the house during Happy Hour. I look forward to returning my poker chip and having another pint at McKenna’s Pub again soon!

Enrique Wilson Owned Pedro Martinez
Random Athlete Edition
People forget that Enrique Wilson hit .364 against Pedro. @YouTheReader sorry I had to end with a random athlete on this one. Wilson was that bench piece that could play all over the infield. He played for the Yanks from ‘01 to ‘04 and you never forget your favorite team’s utility guy during your formative years of fandom.
