Cringe | Yanks & Mets Weekend | Rangers Draft | Rocket Mortgage Classic | June Finish & July Preview
Matt Maeson told the American Songwriter, “‘Cringe’ is about being pushed away by the people you care about because of the lifestyle you live. I lived pretty rough for a while, and some of the people I really cared about would rather tell me how wrong I was rather than ask how I was doing.”
I’m coming from a happy hour on the water turned late night where a higher-up openly called me out in a group, “Tom, when was the last time you kissed a girl?…”
To which I responded, “My mother on the cheek last week.” It was all good craic, she was only ball-busting, I just thought it was a Noteworthy clap-back…
*On in the background of the 15-Second Front Page, Cover, Story, Reel, clearly.*
Hopefully, this opener doesn’t make you Cringe! Then again, as a writer, my job is to technically make you feel some way about the words I’ve typed, no?
If you’ve been reading along, last year my Top 4 Artists on Spotify were Drake, Matt Maeson, Taylor Swift, and The Lumineers so this felt like the right time to use the first Matt Maeson song on Week to Week Notes. He’s a special talent. His writing is unreal. One of my favorites putting out music today…
…but I’m getting way ahead of myself. That Spotify list is from a Football Friday last December and this time last year I was only just unveiling the Week to Week Notes’ first real Front Page, Cover, Story, and it wasn’t even a Reel…
Yanks & Mets Weekend
Sevy threw 6 scoreless on Saturday and will face off tonight with 23-year-old southpaw, Matthew Liberatore. The 2nd year Cardinals starter was originally drafted by the Rays in ‘18. The Cardinals just lost to the Astros 14-0 so I wouldn’t be shocked if their embarrassed bats are a bit focused on Friday night against the Yankees in St. Louis.
Heading into the season, this Cole vs Flaherty matchup would have been considered premier. Cole will look to continue to be the Yankees ace while Flaherty will be spending the rest of the season trying to regain his mantle as the Cards’ top guy after dealing with an injury-plagued ‘22 season.
The Yankees have not officially announced who will be starting on Sunday, but they sure are familiar with who they are facing. Jordan Montgomery will toe the slab against the team that drafted him. Monty thus far has been a tick better as a Cardinal than he was for the Yanks and he now sports a beard. This weekend will also be the return of Harrison Bader to St. Louis so expect their fanbase to show Bronx Bader some love.
Alex Cobb is coming off the IL to pitch in Flushing tonight. Carlos Carrasco, simply put, has had a dreadful season for the Mets. The 36-year-old’s age may have caught up to him.
Anthony DeSclafani has awful career numbers against the Mets. In 9 starts, Desclafani is 0-5 with a 6.08 ERA. Kate Upton’s husband wouldn’t discuss the idea that the Mets may look to sell him during the trade deadline. He still believes the Mets can make some noise this year, “Everyone has seen flashes of it and I keep saying if I was on the other side, we would be a team that every time we come here to play, I’d say, ‘I hope this isn’t when they click. As a playoff team, I wouldn’t want to face us.’’
David Peterson will pitch on Sunday Night Baseball for LGM after he just threw a quality start against the Brew Crew. His start saw his ERA drop from 8.08 to 7.00, so there is still work to be done, but he’ll be trying to progress in the Majors rather than down on the farm. The San Francisco Giants don’t yet have a starter named for Sunday night. I wonder if the SF Giants and NY Giants ever go out for dinner and have a couple of drinks?

NHL Locals Draft ‘23
New York Rangers: Gabe Perreault
The Boys in Blue were the only team in the Tri-State with a first-round pick this week and with the 23rd overall pick, they selected Gabriel Perreault. The left-wing set to play at Boston College this upcoming season was the 3rd player selected for the United States National Team Development Program. The 18-year-old is the son of long-time NHLer Yanic Perreault. Yanic played for the Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings, Montreal Canadians, Nashville Predators, Phoenix Coyotes, and Chicago Blackhawks from 1993 to ‘08. Like his father, Gabe is a skilled lefty winger who posted an all-time single-season scoring record this past season of 132 points with 53 goals & 79 assists. Look for Perreault to get some pucks on net and provide some forecheck sometime in the future in a Garden near @YouTheReader.
Detroit, MI | Detroit Golf Club - North Course | $8,800,000 (Purse) | GOLF/CBS
The Rocket Mortgage Classic's "Changing the Course" initiative is committed to providing Detroit residents access to the internet, technology, and digital literacy training they need to thrive. Through its support for the tournament's primary beneficiary, the Connect 313 Fund, the Rocket Mortgage Classic has helped grow the number of digitally included homes in Detroit from 40% to more than 70% over the last four years. All the golfers this weekend will compete to make an eagle, ace, and birdie on holes 14, 15 & 16 for the Area 313 Challenge. The first golfer to do so will win $313,000 in their name toward Rocket Mortgage Classic charities connected to digital access and Detroit’s digital divide. Anytime a player hits a “3” or “1” or “3,” on the respective holes, there will be a direct donation made by Rocket Mortgage as follows: a “3” or eagle on hole 14 will amount to a $2,500 donation, a “1” or hole-in-one on hole 15 will amount to a $10,000 donation, a “3” or birdie on hole 16 will amount to a $2,500 donation. (Source: Rocket Mortgage Classic) Tony Finau won the ‘22 Rocket Mortgage Classic by shooting 26 under par.
After Round 1
Peter Kuest
Peter Kuest is the underdog at the top of the leaderboard after Thursday. He told reporters after Round 1 that had he not qualified for the Rocket Mortgage Classic this past Monday, he would have been out fishing right now. Kuest actually started playing golf after breaking his arm playing baseball and golf was the first sport he could play during his rehab. Now Kuest is missing out on fishing and competing for a PGA Tour Win. Good luck!
Taylor Moore
Taylor Moore and Peter Kuest are tied but poor Moore doesn’t even have a Twitter or YouTube video from yesterday despite shooting a 64. He’ll have to settle for this boring photo the PGA Tour provides. Moore finished in 6th place last year at the ‘22 Rocket Mortgage Classic so he knows this 18 pretty well.
Sam Ryder
Sam Ryder slam-dunked home an eagle on the 10th hole. The Stetson University alum has 2 professional wins - one coming on the PGA Tour Canada and one on Web.com Tour.
Sam Bennett
Sam Bennett after Thursday, "I just need some more experience playing the weekends...Some of the bad scores on the weekends have been from my body just giving out. Hopefully, in the offseason, I can do some work to get my legs a little stronger." Remember, Bennett is only 23 years old and just turned professional this past May ‘23. He was the low amateur at The Masters finishing tied for 16th overall and he placed a respectable 43rd at the U.S. Open. Bennett will look to continue his consistent play and will gain some experience he is looking for.
Colin Morikawa
Colin Morikawa is one of the more accomplished golfers playing in the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Morikawa is frustrated so far by the winless ‘23 season, “winning to me, is everything.” He came into Detroit with a back so that could be something to monitor as the weekend progresses.

Ahhh, Jesus, Mary, & Joseph - Tommy - this isn’t going to help me with the skeptical readers, everybody knows “I read these calendar quotes like fortune cookies.”
