Super Bowl LIX Notes Nobody Asked For
Pregame
- The very 1st Taylor Swift TV sighting happens at 5:41 PM ET.
- Brad Pitt delivers a very touching monologue on togetherness in the huddle. Thank you, Brad Pitt, very touching.
- Trevor Sunshine Lawrence has a commercial will American Eagle apparel. Does Aeropostale have an athlete?
- Who knew the guy from PS I Love You was from New Orleans? Learning so much, and the game hasn’t even started.
- The Coca-Cola commercial about AI seemed a bit odd and unnecessary.
- Jon Baptiste’s National Anthem clocks in at 1:58, but I have a slow trigger on the stopwatch. He really milked the final verse of the Star-Spangled Banner. It was good and fit the New Orleans vibes, but no Chris Stapleton. Sorry, not sorry.
- Right before kick-off, we get another opening monologue, this time from Tom Cruise. Thank you, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. That was very touching. I’m now ready for football.
1st Quarter
- Fox goes with a futuristic PNG scorebug. Very simplistic. Modern. Daring.
- The Eagles get the ball first. Nick Bolton makes an excellent open-field tackle on Saquon, setting up a 4th & 2 from midfield. Hurts connects with AJ Brown on a deep ball down the sideline, but Brown gets called for slightly pushing off. Tom Brady in the booth HATES the call. Not that Tom Brady needs my confirmation, but it was weak.
- On KC’s first drive, Travis Kelce drops a pass over the middle. This sets up a punt. There are videos on Twitter of Taylor Swift being booed while on the Jumbotron. Surely, these are AI-Generated of some sort.
- Kansas City gets a taste of their own medicine as Dallas Goedert draws a flag on a slight hit to the head. Jalen Hurts later finds Jahan Dotson at the goal line. Hurts then scores on a Tush Push the very next play. 7-0 PHI
- Philly’s defense then forces a 3-N-Out. Dotson and DeVonta Smith pick up consecutive 1st Downs. On a 3rd & 4, Kansas City brings the blitz and sacks Hurts, but the play is negated with a man in the neutral zone.
2nd Quarter
- Right before the start of the Quarter, Barry Keoghan is throwing laptops into pubs in rural Ireland. The Irish Squarespace commercial was class. My favorite commercial so far.
- The Chiefs effectively bring the blitz again on Hurts, forcing a turnover on a Bryan Cook interception. Offensively, KC can’t move the football as Kelce drops another pass, forcing another 3-N-Out. Philadelphia goes up 10-0 on a Field Goal.
- I fookin’ hate all these AI commercials trying to give off some heartwarming message. At least the Rocket Mortgage Commercial was just the fans in the stands singing Country Road. More of that. Show the humans while we’re still in charge of the robots.
- Josh Sweat gets a sack, some Philly Defensive End with a last name Hunt gets a sack, and then Cooper Dejean returns a Patrick Mahomes Pick-6. Wow! 17-0 Philly
- Half of the Chiefs sideline is stunned, and the other half is livid. Mahomes and their offense can’t move the ball again, forcing a punt. The Chiefs’ defense finally gets a bit of momentum but is flagged for an unnecessary roughness call on a late hit to Saquon. It would’ve been 3rd & 22.
- The Hellman’s Mayo commercial remaking the When Harry Met Sally diner scene was funny. It also featured Sydney Sweeney; she delivered her one-liner great.
- The Chiefs finally get a stop on defense. Fox shows Taylor Swift for the 2nd time tonight. The very next play, Patrick Mahomes throws another interception, setting up Philly with an easy TD to AJ Brown. 24-0 Eagles
- This game sucks. Imagine if Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance is terrible, too….
Halftime
- Drake won.
3rd Quarter
- The Chiefs get the ball to start the 2nd half. Jordan Davis and Josh Sweat take turns sacking Mahomes.
- The Eagles methodically move the ball down the field, killing time while kicking a Field Goal. 27-0 PHI
- Shane Gillis’ Bud Light commercial was solid. Good for him.
- DeVonta Smith catches a bomb for a touchdown. That’s gotta be the dagger as the Eagles go up 34-0.
- Kansas City finally scores right before the end of the Quarter, just to mess with everyone’s Super Bowl boxes. It was a nice catch by Xavier Worthy. 34-6 PHI
4th Quarter
- The Eagles hit another FG to go up 37-6. Fox announcer Kevin Burkhardt is still trying to hype up a Kansas City comeback when they are down 31 points with less than 10 minutes to go. It’s even funnier when Mahomes gets strip-sacked on the very next play. 40-6 PHI
- DeAndre Hopkins gets his name in Super Bowl record books with a TD to make it 40-14. Eagles HC Nick Siranni gets dumped with Lime Yellow Gatorade by his star duo of WRs as Xavier Worthy catches another deep ball to make the score, and Mahomes' stats look somewhat decent. 40-22 Philly.
- Let the record show this was the worst Super Bowl since the Seahawks-Broncos blowout in New York (maybe even worse), but I’m happy for Eagles fans like K-Choo. Week to Week Notes formerly congratulates the Philadelphia Eagles on their Super Bowl LIX victory. Jalen Hurts is the Super Bowl MVP, deservedly so.

Omarr Norman-Lott, DT, Tennessee
Omarr Norman-Lott is from North Highlands, California. He attended Grant Union in Sacramento, where he racked up 17 sacks in his high school career. A 4-star prospect entering college, Norman-Lott redshirted at Arizona State in ‘20 before becoming a depth piece off the Sun Devils’ bench in ‘21 and ‘22. During his 3 seasons at ASU, Norman-Lott finished with 45 tackles, 7 TFLs, and 4 sacks. Before his junior season in ‘23, Omarr Norman-Lott decided to transfer to the Tennessee Volunteers, where he immediately assumed a bigger role on the Vols’ defensive line. He finished ‘23 with 26 tackles, 6 TFLs, and 5.5 sacks. This past season, Norman-Lott was again a key piece to the Volunteers’ defensive tackle rotation. The 5th-year senior recorded 4 sacks, 4 TFLs, and 9 QB Hits. At 6’3” and 315 lbs., Omarr Norman-Lott has the potential to become a rotational NFL defensive tackle with plenty of potential as a pass rusher. After an impressive week at the Reese’s Senior Bowl, the narrative around the NFL scouting community (on Twitter) seems to be Norman-Lott was undervalued at Tennessee, and they should’ve found more ways to use him despite their defensive line depth.
Jayden Higgins, WR, Iowa State
Jayden Higgins is from South Miami, Florida. He attended high school at Westminster Christian School, where he caught 50 passes for 920 yards and 9 TDs as an upperclassman. Higgins also played basketball at Westminster Christian, averaging 15 points and 6 rebounds per game. His initial school out of high school was Eastern Kentucky. During his first year in DI-AA, Higgins struggled a bit out of the gate, recording 29 catches for 394 yards and 3 TDs. He returned to Eastern Kentucky as a sophomore and broke out, doubling his catches (58) while gaining 747 yards with 10 scores. Iowa State came calling once he entered the transfer portal in ‘23. As a junior for the Cyclones, Higgins made 53 catches for 983 yards and 6 TDs. This earned him an Honorable Mention on the All-Big 12 Team and was awarded the conference’s Newcomer of the Year. This past season was Jayden Higgins’ best season yet. The senior was named a captain of the Cyclones as he caught 87 passes for 1,183 yards and 9 TDs. The big target wideout earned AP 3rd Team All-American honors. While Higgins may not be a YAC monster, the 6’4” WR can naturally box out defenders on contested catches downfield. After a strong showing at the Reese’s Senior Bowl, Higgins projects to be a Day 2 pick with the upside to be a starting outside WR in the NFL.
Ozzy Trapilo, OT, Boston College
Ozzy Trapilo is from Norwell, Massachusetts. He is the son of the late Boston College All-American and New Orleans Saints offensive guard Steve Trapilo. Ozzy Trapilo attended Boston College High School, where he earned All-State recognition but wasn’t listed as a 3-star prospect on the national scale. Trapilo stayed within the Boston College confines as a redshirt during his freshman year of college in ‘20. In ‘21, Trapilo served as a backup offensive guard and eventually earned a single start on both sides at guard. After just 1 season of limited playing time, Ozzy Trapilo took over the Eagles’ blindside as he made 10 starts at Left Tackle. Although he had an up-and-down year while allowing 5 sacks, he showed enough potential to maintain a starting job as a junior. In ‘23, Trapilo was shifted over to Right Tackle, and the positive results soon followed. In 12 starts at RT in ‘23, Trapilo allowed zero sacks and only 3 QB hits all season. This earned him an All-ACC 2nd Team selection. As a grad student at Boston College in ‘24, Trapilo starred at RT for 12 more starts, and this time was named 1st Team All-ACC. Over the course of the past 2 seasons, Ozzy Trapilo has earned a PFF College Grade of over 80 for his pass blocking. At 6’8” and 309 lbs., Ozzy Trapilo has the NFL size that you can’t teach. While he may not be a run-mauler at RT, Trapilo’s pass blocking ability will make him a valuable mid-round selection in the NFL Draft.
Devin Neal, RB, Kansas
Devin Neal is from Lawrence, Kansas. A 3-star prospect out of Lawrence High School, Neal rushed for 1,300 yards and 20 TDs his senior year. After drawing interest from Nebraska, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State, Devin Neal decided to play for his home state of Kansas. In ‘21, Neal became the first freshman Jayhawk to ever win the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week. That season, in total, he rushed for 707 yards and 8 TDs. During his sophomore campaign in ‘22, Devin Neal ran for 1,090 yards and 9 TDs while also catching 21 passes. Devin Neal then followed that up in ‘23 with 1,280 rushing yards and 16 TDs as he finally was named 2nd Team All-Big 12. After flirting with entering the NFL Draft, Neal decided to stick around at Kansas for his senior year in ‘24. He became the first Kansas Jayhawk to run for 1,000+ yards in 3 seasons, as he became the school’s all-time leading rusher. Neal finished his final season at Kansas with 1,266 rushing yards and 16 TD scores while also catching 25 passes for 254 yards. In terms of production, Devin Neal is one of the most consistent players in this year’s NFL Draft. His unique running style and quick bursts make him one of the more elusive running backs of this class.
Kaimon Rucker, Edge, North Carolina
Kaimon Rucker is from Hartwell, Georgia. He played high school football for Hart County, where he posted 15.5 sacks, 30 TFLs, and 130 tackles as an upperclassman. A 3-star prospect entering college, Rucker found the field in 10 games as a true freshman at UNC. He compiled 21 tackles and 3 TFLs in ‘20. As a sophomore in ‘21, Rucker made 10 starts for the Tar Heels, finishing with 4 sacks and 5.5 TFLs. After playing 2 seasons as an outside linebacker, Rucker spent his junior year more as a defensive end and was an effective run-defender with 37 tackles. His breakout season came as a senior when he was 2nd Team All-ACC. Kaimon Rucker made all 13 starts as an outside linebacker in ‘23, recording career-highs with 8.5 sacks, 15 TFLs, and 39 QB Hurries. Rucker decided to return for a 5th year in ‘24, and although he missed some time with injury, the grad student edge rusher added on 6 more sacks to his career totals while also catching his first interception. Rucker is better suited to rush the passer but has limited experience in coverage, adding some versatility. Maybe it’s because he also wears #7, but I see a bit of Hasson Reddick in his game.

Jase Richardson, G, Michigan State
Jase Richardson is from Denver, Colorado. His father, Jason Richardson, starred at Michigan State the last time the National Championship in 2000, was a 2-time NBA Slam Dunk Champion, and had an excellent 13-year career in the NBA. Jase’s mother, Jackie, was also a collegiate basketball player and coached Jase’s youth teams while Jason Richardson was in the NBA. Jase Richardson finished his high school hoops at Columbus in Florida, where he was a 4-star recruit selected to both the Jordan Brand and Iverson Classics. His first choice appears to have always been Michigan State, as he wanted to play for Coach Tom Izzo, just like his father. As a freshman this season, Richardson is the Spartans’ 6th Man off the bench. Entering the weekend, the shooting guard averaged 9.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2 assists per game while shooting 40% from beyond the arc. On Saturday afternoon, with the Spartans down double-digits at half-time, it was Jase Richardson who sparked a 2nd half comeback as he scored 18 points in the final 20 minutes. The freshman guard had a career-high 29 points along with 5 boards. Thanks to Richardson’s great play, Izzo not only tied Bob Knight for most career Big Ten victories, but the 2000 National Champions were in attendance to celebrate as well for their 25th anniversary.
Dug McDaniel, G, Kansas State
Dug McDaniel is from Washington, DC. The McDaniel family has basketball in their blood. Dug’s grandfather, Charles “Skip” McDaniel, played professionally in Niagara, and his uncle, Eddie Jordan, won an NBA title with the Lakers in 1982. Dug McDaniel played high school hoops at St. Paul VI Catholic, averaging 17.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.8 steals per game as a senior. McDaniel’s first collegiate stop was at Michigan, where he played the last 2 seasons. As a freshman & sophomore for the Wolverines, McDaniels made 52 starts while averaging 12 points, 4.1 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. This past off-season, McDaniel decided to transfer to Kansas State. Now a Wildcat, McDaniel averages 10.1 points and 4.4 assists per game. Over the weekend, McDaniel had his best performance yet, recording a double-double with 15 points and 11 assists in KSU’s upset win over Kansas. At 5’11”, Dug McDaniel has elite quickness and handle; an exciting player to watch.
RJ Luis, F, St. John’s
RJ Luis Jr. is from Miami, Florida. As a junior at Christopher Columbus High School down in Miami, Luis Jr. was 1st Team All-State after averaging 25 points and 11 boards per game. In his senior season, he transferred to Mt. Zion Prep in Maryland. Coming out of high school, RJ Luis Jr. initially chose to play for UMass. As a freshman in ‘22-’23, the lefty averaged 11.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. This earned him a spot on the A-10 All-Rookie Team. Luis Jr. then decided to transfer to St. John’s last season. In 23 games (10 starts), the wing player averaged 10.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.2 steals. After shooting 35% from 3 at UMass, Luis Jr. shot only 20% from beyond the arc last season. While Luis Jr. still has some room to improve from beyond the arc this season (27% from 3), the junior forward leads the Johnnies in scoring at 17.6 points per game. Last week, RJ Luis’ 21 points led the way in St. John’s victory over UConn. The Red Storm have been on fire of late, winning 10 straight games for the 1st time since the 1984-85 season, which was the last time St. John’s made the Final Four.
Chase Walker, F, Illinois State
Chase Walker is from Columbus, Ohio. He played high school basketball at St. Charles, Ohio, where he averaged 19.5 points per game as a senior while weighing in at 360 pounds. While other Division I programs overlooked Walker, Illinois State decided to recruit him. He joined the Red Birds program with the initial thought being he may have to redshirt his freshman year to cut down on weight. By January of ‘24, Walker dedicated himself to Illinois State’s regiment, and he cut 70 pounds. Rather than remaining a redshirt last year, Walker saw 17 games of experience off the Red Birds bench as he averaged 3.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. This season, Walker entered his sophomore campaign down to 275 lbs. and earned a starting role for the Red Birds. Through his hard work, Walker now leads Illinois State in both scoring (15.8) and rebounding (6). The crafty, lefthanded big man has especially been on a tear of late. Last week, Walker scored a career-high 31 points with 9 rebounds in Illinois State’s win over UIC. Currently at 15-10, the Red Birds will attempt to reach their first 20-win season as a program since 2017. With more strong performances from Chase Walker in the low post, Illinois State may have a shot at winning the Missouri Valley Conference later in March.
