Rough week at the office. We had to let one of the interns go for not reminding me to do a preview for yesterday’s Army vs. Navy game. @YouTheReader my bad, I’ll make it up to you with a recap…
Army 20 vs Navy 17
Saturday’s matchup was the 123rd meeting between the United States Armed Forces interservice rivalry. The first meeting between these two schools was on November 29, 1890. Since 1945, the game has been nationally televised on either ABC, NBC, or CBS. Fun fact: Instant replay made its American debut in the 1963 rendition, which featured Roger Staubach at QB for the Navy (Source: USA Today). Even after Saturday’s results, the Navy still leads this amazing American tradition by the record of 62–54–7.
After a scoreless first quarter, Navy struck first on a 44-yard field goal from Bijan Nichols.
A Navy blocked punt by Army’s Noah Short and recovery for a TD by Jabril Williams put the Black Knights up 7-3.
Here’s another view of Jabril Williams’ impressive body control. Had his right foot stepped out of bounds in the end zone, the result of the play would have been a touchback where Navy received the ball and no points for Army.
Anton Hall Jr.’s 77-yard TD run gave the Midshipmen a 10-7 lead.
A clutch 4th quarter 37-yard kick from Black Knights’ kicker, Quinn Maretzki, sent this game to OT. The first time these two teams have ever played in overtime.
Army’s Markel Johnson scored a TD on the first play in extra time.
On the very next play, Navy’s Xavier Arline hit Maquel Haywood for a TD to tie.
Army forced a turnover on a goal-line stand where Anton Hall Jr. fumbled at the 1-yard line.
Quinn Maretzki’s 39-yard field goal finished this classic. Hard not to feel for Anton Hall Jr’s heartbreaking reaction, but hopefully, he can find solace in the fact that he rushed for a career-high 99 rushing yards and Navy wouldn’t have made it to OT without him.
